The Cherokee Nation announced Thursday that it had purchased the Blue Ribbon Downs race track in Sallisaw.
Blue Ribbon Downs, the state's first parimutuel race track and first racino in the state had been shuttered by the Choctaw Nation in November at the end of its fall live racing meet, after the track experienced severe financial problems.
Though Cherokee Nation Enterprises, the tribe's gaming, hospitality and tourism subsidiary, did not disclose the terms of the sale or how much it agreed to pay for the track, it did state in a news release that the purchase includes the land, facilities and equipment.

Oklahoma Blue Ribbon Downs will be closing Nov. 28th after nearly half a century of horse racing.
The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma has owned the Racino since 2003. They've been trying to sell the track for the past two years. They said a decline in fans willing to place bets is preventing them from keeping the historic operation going.
"The area experienced a lot of retail growth that probably would not have occurred had the track not lived through those glory days," said Shannon Vann, Sallisaw's mayor.
